Lab Proposal to Pay Hospitals for Specimen Collection Services Could Trigger Sanctions, OIG Says

The Department of Health and Human Services Office of Inspector General (OIG) said in an advisory opinion posted April 28 that it could not rule out sanctions in connection with a proposed arrangement where the operator of clinical laboratories would contract with hospitals nationwide and pay them on a per-patient-encounter basis to collect specimens that are then sent to the labs for testing.
